To appear in Natural Language and Linguistic Theory Weak Triggers in Vowel Harmony

چکیده
This paper examines vowel harmony initiated by a weak trigger. Height harmony in Veneto Italian dialects, wherein a post-tonic high vowel triggers raising of preceding mid vowels, forms a case study. Veneto presents two variable patterns: stresstargeted harmony, in which harmony propagates to the stressed syllable, and maximal extension harmony, in which raising persists to pretonic vowels. The conditions under which weak vowels trigger and control harmony are examined. It is argued that weak trigger harmony is motivated by perceptual disadvantage: harmony improves exposure of the spreading feature, accomplished either by extending to a stressed position or maximizing duration in the word. The apparent primacy of the vowel quality in weak position in Veneto is accounted for by markedness factors that independently prevent the stressed vowel from overriding it. In regard to positional privilege, it is argued that positional licensing (markedness) drives stress-targeted spreading – positional faithfulness is inappropriate to characterize strong targets. A weak trigger pattern emerges when licensing constraints operating over perceptually marked structure dominate positional faithfulness. Crosslinguistic applications are also explored.

Verifying Vowel Harmony Typologies
This paper applies finite state technologies to verify the typological validity of Turbid Spreading, a theory of vowel harmony in Optimality Theory (OT) (Prince & Smolensky, 1993/2004). Previous analyses of vowel harmony in OT have been prone to typological inconsistencies, predicting grammars that do not occur in natural language (Wilson, 2003). However, attempts to eliminate typological patho...
متن کاملLinguistic and Non-Linguistic Influences on Learning Biases for Vowel Harmony
This paper addresses the question of the domain-specificity of learning biases for phonological processes. In two artificial grammar learning experiments we explore the role of learning biases in shaping the distribution of phonological patterns across the world’s languages. In Experiment 1, we demonstrate that learners are biased toward phonological patterns that occur in natural language, as ...
متن کاملLearning Vowel Harmony
It is possible to construct an unsupervised learning system for vowel harmony, which makes accessible general-isations. Furthermore, such a learning system can be constructed with little built-in knowledge, and, consequently, be applicable to data from a wide range of domains. This paper presents a learning system which fulllls these criteria, and examines the results of applying an implementat...
متن کاملHarmonic cues for speech segmentation: a cross-linguistic corpus study on child-directed speech.
Previous studies on the role of vowel harmony in word segmentation are based on artificial languages where harmonic cues reliably signal word boundaries. In this corpus study run on the data available at CHILDES, we investigated whether natural languages provide a learner with reliable segmentation cues similar to the ones created artificially. We observed that in harmonic languages (child-dire...
متن کاملVowel Harmony and Disharmony in Tuvan and Tofa
Harmony systems are often described in the linguistic literature in a highly schematic and somewhat idealized fashion. Further, instances of disharmony within harmony languages typically have been treated as exceptional or anomalous, rather than as a natural and expected part of the harmony system. In documenting several vowel harmony languages indigenous to Siberia, we found both highly patter...
